I look back on my course of action as lunacy; and yet at the time it seemed the only way out. Pride, probably. One can never escape from one's ancestors. Old Cunobel understood that. But there was a perverted common sense in it, too. The police admitted afterwards that if I had continued to live my normal life - and since I had to work to eat, what else could I do? - they would not have been able to protect me.
