From an Associated Press report on December 8, 1941:
"IMPERIAL HEADQUARTERS AT TOKYO declared war late today against both the United States and Britain after Japanese bombers had attacked the great Pearl Harbor naval base at Honolulu, and the Philippines, and latest reports indicated that the United States had won the first battle in the new world war."
A few more victories like that and we would have been undone.
