Veterans Day

Although veterans can have very different experiences during their service, they have a lot in common: a memorable boot camp where they became acquainted with strict discipline, weaponry, and physical exhaustion; close contact with people from very diverse racial and economic backgrounds; and the camaraderie that comes in helping each other to achieve a mission.

They also went through the best leadership training in the world.

I occasionally hear stereotypes regarding veterans; views that are completely conflicting with my Army experience. The civilian world often gains its pictures of the military from motion pictures. We all know how distorted those can be.

It would be presumptuous to speak for all veterans so I'll simply note that when any issue related to those who have served arises, basic respect for that service goes a long way.

Happy Veterans Day.

Here's to you and my father, grandfather, and two uncles!

The United States remains a free country (and beacon to the thousands to emigrate to her) because of the brave.
