John Glenn, R.I.P.

He broke the transcontinental speed record as a military test pilot in 1957, crossing from the California coast to New York's Long Island in three hours and twenty-three minutes, before being recruited as an astronaut. On February 20, 1962, he became the third American and fifth human in space, making US history by orbiting the earth three times.
