Structure and Results

Never forget the astute observation by organizational design scholar Arthur W. Jones: "All organizations are perfectly aligned to get the results they get."

If you don't like the results, look at the structure. Something in it is producing those results.

Consider two common sins and what they produce:

  • Blur responsibility and you'll lose accountability.
  • Overlap authority and you'll get conflict.

A rule for avoiding problems: "Design it to produce what you want."
