Flashback to an Ethics Meeting

I was meeting with a corporate team of executives and managers to discuss how to design their ethics program. Several of the people at the conference room table came from locations around the world.

When one of the Americans proposed the use of a hotline so people could report ethics violations, the Eastern Europeans became upset.

Why?

Because of their sad experience under totalitarian regimes that used informants.

The ethics hotline idea was put on hold.
