Very intriguing and I’ve become a foot watcher. Re-blogged over at my Mitigating Chaos site. Also ordered “All I Said Was” which I expect to be a helpful guide for working with the 20-something girls that cry if you look at them, talk to them, ask them to get off their phone, and God forbid, ask them to stay five minutes over to simply finish something that should have been completed hours ago. (See note regarding phone usage). The workplace is much different than even ten years ago, but you know that better than I do.
Thanks for ordering All I Said Was. My general recommendation to clients is to focus on the action or behavior and avoid expanding the issue to the person. A related point is to imagine that if your behavior (actions, words, and tone) were to be reviewed by a jury or the general public, would you appear to be thoroughly professional.
Years ago, I encountered a supervisor who'd polished his approach to the point that when he fired people, they actually thanked him for giving them a chance!

P.S. I highly recommend "That's Not What I Meant!" by Deborah Tannen.
Sound advice and I look forward to getting the book delivered on Wednesday
