Managing with Mental Pictures
The mental pictures we form of situations govern our handling of them. A workplace that is regarded as a machine will be managed differently than if the mental picture is of a farm, a classroom, a sailing ship, a rocket launch, or a sports team.
The many roles of management can be equally restrictive. To choose is to focus - and there are many benefits to that - but it is also to exclude.
It is crucial to know what you are excluding so you'll have a sense of the dangers and opportunities that might be, just barely, out of sight.

Hence the need to expand your horizons as a manager. The more mental pictures you have access to, the more possibilities you can see in any situation.
