There's a reason most of those books end up gathering dust. They are 'art' and 'serious literature.' In other words, they are deadly dull. You're supposed to read them to touch the great mind--it's good for you. You are not supposed to find such pedestrian bourgeouis values as entertainment exhibited there.
Gimme a good story: Elmore Leonard, Michael Connelly, James Ellroy, or similar any day.
