Considering a Door-Desk

FutureLawyer's idea of transforming his home office with the use of wine crates and a large wooden door has me thinking.

In 2009, LifeHacker explored several door-desk options, including the idea of using a glass door. I don't think I'd use glass but a large, thick, wooden door sparks my interest.

The appeal of the door-desk is obvious: You get a large amount of desk space for a relatively small amount of money.

Of course, there are downsides and I expect to hear them from family members. [Those nay-sayers!]

Here is a somewhat dissenting take on the famous door-desks used at Amazon headquarters.

Hmm.

Sawhorses might be helpful.

My father was an architect. In college, he explained, you always knew who the architectural students were because their dorm rooms had no doors. The students removed the doors, placed them on sawhorses, covered them with borco (a vinyl surface suitable for drafting), and used them as drafting tables. When I wanted a bigger desk in college, Dad bought me a door, covered it in borco, and used cheap filing cabinets as my ends. Perfect.

Kurt,

I really like the filing cabinet idea. This may happen. If so, photos to follow.

Thanks!

Go for it, Michael. Nix the naysayers. Follow your heart. It isn't the desk anyway. It's the brain matter between the ears. It it is flat and the right height, I can work there.
