The State of the Union Circus

We need to go back to the days when the State of the Union message was not delivered as a speech but was simply sent to Congress.

The speech has become a spectacle, an exercise in political buffoonery and maudlin gestures. The only people in the chamber who retain any serious amounts of dignity are members of the Supreme Court and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The event is outdated. It has become the equivalent of a long evening with Milton Berle and Jerry Lewis. It is high time to put it to rest.
