The Gloom Finders

It took no time at all for many journalists to see a downside in the death of al-Zarqawi.

My favorite so far comes from Spencer Ackerman at The New Republic and he's one of the more moderate ones. [Update: The New Republic had the story available to all readers yesterday. Now they require registration.]

The reasoning of many of the commentators: The US failure to get al-Zarqawi is a sign of the failure of the military to successfully prosecute the war. What? They got him? Oh, that means means things will get worse.
