Christopher Hitchens defends The New York Times.
I feel the same way regarding prior restraint by the government. That is quite different, of course, from a newspaper's ethical obligation to show restraint during a war. Hitchens notes that the First Amendment survived revelations during the Second World War. That's true, but it is also true that soldiers' lives were risked by such exposure and it is hard to see what good was achieved by the revelation.
