This article from The Guardian on the British museums that are closing or in danger of doing so makes me wonder if the "museum experience," so to speak, is threatened by the reduced attention span and tight schedules of modern society.
Museums require time and their success may depend upon adjusting exhibit placement and visiting hours to facilitate short visits. [Several years ago, The Phoenix Zoo shifted its African exhibit to an area near the main entrance. I've long suspected that move was made so parents with young children could easily pop in, see some of the animals of significant interest, and then pop out instead of trudging past the B-grade exhibits.]
