Nowhere in Africa

I finally got around to seeing the DVD for the foreign language film that won the Oscar in 2002: Nowhere in Africa.

It is an extraordinary film. A Jewish family leaves Germany in 1938 because of the father's sense that terrible things might happen. He settles the family in Kenya in what initially appears to be a harsh land. As various conflicts arise, the story conveys a more compelling message about the ultimate values that bind people than all of the diversity training programs out there. The acting is top-notch and the soundtrack is beautiful. I didn't always enjoy watching the film, simply because it does not glamorize the setting or the characters - there's no Robert Redford in an J. Peterman safari outfit - but the story is unforgettable.

Chicago won Best Picture in 2002. After seeing this, you'll wonder if it was truly the best.
