One of the books on my nightly reading stack lately has been fascinating:
The New Emperors by Harrison E. Salisbury.
Salibury writes about the rise to power of Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, their distinct personalities, and their interactions with associates.
No detail, including the effect of constipation on Mao's moods, seems to be omitted but the story is a great way to get a sense of the founders of modern China. I knew far more about Mao's background than Deng's and have largely appreciated the book because of that.
