Know the lay of the land, when to retreat and when to engage, what's worth fighting for and what is not worth the hassle, who'll be your allies and who'll be your adversaries, who's got which weapons, whether time is a friend or foe, how your resources can be brought to bear, whether you are fighting the last war, which side has the greater patience, which side cares least, where to focus, where opposition is weak, and where you want to be when it's all over.
