When used in small quantities, ego can be a stimulant. In large quantities, it can be a poison. A challenge for organizations and teams is how to keep a reasonable balance. Ego problems can easily arise in the following circumstances:
- People feel that their status has received insufficient respect.
- There are conflicting visions of egalitarianism versus merit.
- Team members have divided loyalties.
- Factions seek control.
- A statute of limitations is not applied to past sins.
- The organizational structure encourages resentment.
- Rank is pulled too often or where it is inappropriate.
