Re-Write

Anyone who fears the completion of multiple drafts may not understand the writing process. Of course the substance is important, but so too are pacing and tone. To delve into those, you have to go paragraph by paragraph, sentence by sentence, and word by word. Throughout the process, you must be alert to anything that doesn't feel or sound right because feeling and sound are alarm bells that should never be ignored.

You'll want to ignore them. You'll get tired and impatient and begin to dismiss your concerns. Don't. Your mind is trying to tell you something. Even if the prose is fine, the poetry may be off.

Think it through, pinpoint the concern, and then start another draft.

Hug the wastebasket and enjoy the process.
