Random Thoughts

Have you ever wondered what would be the business equivalent of "Rhapsody in Blue?" Accountability gaps and credibility gaps are closely related. There will always be a market for wisdom but it will be much smaller than the ones for trivia and gossip. A great mystery about women is why they continue to wear uncomfortable shoes. We should make a weekly ritual of destroying self-imposed limitations. When it comes to leadership, George C. Marshall and Ulysses S. Grant are grand choices. [We should use the word "grand" more often.]  An organization which falls into the habit of promoting weasels may find it difficult to break. There is a much higher tolerance for mediocre leadership nowadays, perhaps because our society celebrates the ability to persuade people that a toad is a unicorn. May a warning light start flashing whenever executives talk about how hard they work. Pick out a different country each year and focus on learning about its history, culture, and government. News bias comes through more in what is not said than in what is said. A major advantage is the ability to attract followers in times of crisis. A major virtue is deserving those followers. Have frequent reviews to make sure the "incrementals" are running in the right direction. At certain points, it is not unusual to find that a good 60 to 80 percent of top management doesn't know what the hell is going on.  How many people postpone seeing a doctor because of the scale? To be reassured or nervous, examine the assumptions which govern your life. You have more friends than you think and scores of enemies who have never met you. Life's thunderstorms are magnificent when viewed from a cozy room. Doing with less and thinking with more are elements of happiness. Maintaining a climate of healthy unity in an organization is no minor achievement. There are days when a slow drive on a country road is needed. We like the other person's deadlines to be shorter and our own to be longer. There is a daily rush past fascinating things to search for the boring. I've yet to find a color photograph that beats a fine black-and-white one. Our schooling takes subjects in boxes and then life demands that we blend the material. [What if we did it the other way around?] Despite all efforts at organization, most days we are shooting without a script.
