Good Days, Great Days, and Our Internal Alarm
Good days may be filled with pleasure and fun and yet great days often involve struggle and achievement. This does not mean constant progress is necessary - a day of relaxation can be time well-spent - but there should be the sense that it was indeed well-spent.
Our conscience will tell us when we have squandered hours. Unfortunately, its alarm bell is muffled when we are squandering decades. To hear that sound, distance and serious introspection are necessary.
