At the Meeting

  • Smile.
  • Listen carefully.
  • Don't talk too much.
  • Make eye contact.
  • Give them your attention.
  • Listen for what is meant.
  • Notice what is not said.
  • Don't talk too much.
  • Restrain your ego.
  • Don't rush to conclusions.
  • Strive for clarity.
  • Beware of rapid agreement.
  • Determine if real progress is being made.
  • Link actions to the Big Picture.
  • Don't talk too much.

I find this approach both encouraging and amusing. I have long practiced these same rules which have rewarded me with a great deal of success but I am amused because if I've ever had advice from a line manager, it has been to "speak up more in meetings". I feel somewhat vindicated that my more considered participation in meetings (vs broadcasting for the broadcasting's sake) is shared by others. Thanks!

Alex,

Thank you. I've had similar advice on speaking up at meetings. I wonder if it comes from the same people who recommend never saying no to taking on another project.
