Monday

A habit is not an occasional practice or it is not a habit. A rule does not have frequent exceptions or it is not a rule. Doing things when you feel like doing them is not a great plan of action. And common sense is not that common so relying on it can be quite risky.

With these in mind, let us charge into the week.

Hmmmm.... Wouldn't a Stoic be indifferent to norms of behavior and external measures of success? Doing things when you feel like doing them, as long as you are virtuous, seems right to me. It is when we allow the uncontrollable external to control us that we get into trouble. What say you, Professor? Hmmmm?

Rick,

Can you not argue that being indifferent to norms of behavior and external measures of success themselves constitute a norm of behavior> And when you tack on the "as long as you are virtuous" to doing things when you feel like doing them, that raises the question of whether virtue carries any obligations to others.

I would argue that even a Stoic needs a balance so consideration of the uncontrollable externals is, on occasion, given.
