Harari's "Magic Consultant's Report"

Way back in the mists of time, 1996 to be exact, management professor, writer, and speaker Oren Harari wrote an article called "The Magic Consultant's Report."

He described it as a gold mine for consultants and, with tongue only slightly in cheek, noted that they could dust it off, plug in new names, and use it time after time as a report on company problems. He knew its value because he'd actually written the report in 1984 and found, years later, that its findings were still applicable to many firms.

What were the problems cited in the magic report? See if you recognize any of them.

  1. Insufficient clarity and consistency among top management regarding business philosophy, mission, direction and strategy.

  2. Insufficient coaching and performance feedback by top management.

  3. Insufficient recognition, reward and celebration for individual and team performance.

  4. Insufficient sense among employees of being part of a companywide team.

The more things change....
