Character Sightings

Fiction is often very close to reality and that can be easily demonstrated by considering how many fictional characters, from novels or films, that you're seen in the workplace. My own character-spotting list is below. I've included a legend to denote the number of sightings.

*One sighting
**More than one but not many
***Many
****More than I can recall
Uriah Heep from David Copperfield ****
Sammy Glick from What Makes Sammy Run? ***
Ignatius Reilly from A Confederacy of Dunces *
Captain Queeg from The Caine Mutiny**
Luke from Cool Hand Luke***
Madame DeFarge from A Tale of Two Cities***
Johnny Rocco from Key Largo***
Sully from Nobody's Fool**
Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany's**
Flounder from Animal House****
David Brent from The Office (British version)***
Forrest Gump from Forrest Gump***
Rick from Casablanca**
George Costanza from Seinfeld****
Kramer from Seinfeld***

I once worked for Major Major from Catch 22. Inaccessible doesn't begin to describe this guy! In th ehighly unlikey event that you were actually allowed past his gatekeeper and into the inner sanctum, you would find him packing his briefcases, because his car was going to be picking him up in 5 minutes.

More evidence that you are the renaissance man I thought you to be! DF

DF,

Thanks much, although some would say it's simply the trail of a slug who reads too much!

Rowan,

Your Major Major example is great. (I think I worked for him.) It reminds of another character sighting: Boo Radley from To Kill a Mockingbord.

Ooh! I think I worked for Boo too - he was not an easy man to get to see and always seemed to be playing with scissors. We used to frighten new arrivals to the company with tales of him stalking the coridoors.

That's sounds more like Norman Bates!
