Rewind! Dangerous Emails = Career Problems

Fortune magazine has a gallery of executives who sent - and regretted - emails that damaged their careers and/or reputations.

As a niave OD director I once sent a relatively impassioned email to a young turk COO professionally chastising him for failing to be at our first ever management off-site for the whole day. We were going to be covering some very important stuff like our current corporate culture survey results, etc. He had wanted the retreat.

His first reaction was to have my head.

His second tactic was to publicly praise me at that very retreat for my "courage" to tell it like it is.

His final step: he "took me out" a couple of years later when the time was right.

Live and learn.

Great story! Too bad it didn't have a happy ending. I knew a chief of staff who called himself a "people person." He was a carnivorous people person.
