IT's Behavior: Rude or Efficient?

Here's a post on the behavior of IT folks that sparked a lot of comments, particularly about its underlying hostility.

Wow. Quite an interesting thread.

I believe the original post, while it had some good points, illustrates why IT people have the reputation they have.

Speaking for financial services (who also sometimes have somewhat undeserved reputations), we're just as smart and hard working as the IT guys. However, most of us realize that in order to get things done, we have to work with others, and you just can't work with others without some of what they now call "soft skills." That is:
- Letting people know they are important.
- Understanding their priorities
- Communicating your expectations of them effectively
- Communicating your area of expertise without being condescending (yes, I do know more about accounting than an IT guy, but I don't rub it in)
- Learning that it’s not all about you.

Thanks for the post, Michael.

Pawnking,

Good points. I know some great IT people who have the soft skills and they stand in stark contrast to the trolls. There are days, however, when it seems like the trolls are more numerous.
