The Danger of Opposites

  • People told him that he was too secretive and so he adopted the habit of being too open.
  • She was once fooled by a manipulative employee. Consequently, she became guarded in all of her supervisory relationships so that would never happen again.
  • He had watched his "goof off" boss favor schmoozing over hard analysis and so when he was promoted to that position, he put client contacts at the bottom of his priorities.

Our moments of introspection should include a check-up for irrational reactions that once seemed to be rational.
