Social Media Questions

I'm barely present on Facebook and rarely visit my page. I do more on LinkedIn but again in a half-hearted way. Twitter gets some of my attention but - no surprise - blogging gets far more.

I'm curious. Which of your ventures into social media are most helpful? Why is that the case?

Facebook in my experience is sort of like a cross between bumper-sticker level discourse and gossipy personal life. That's fine as far as it goes, but it doesn't go very far.

Serious discussion requires more insight and thought than goes into a facebook post. In a blog ideas can be better developed and references can more easily be made to other ideas. Of course blogs cannot match books for being able to take an idea and working out all the implications.

I find the modern age very broad and shallow: due to google and social media everyone knows a lot of different things, but the habit and skill of working out all the nuances of facts and ideas is something which has suffered as a consequence. Even books these days often have a broad and shallow feel (think Malcom Gladwell) as delving deeply becomes a lost art.

Of course as I lament this I also continue to develop my own habit and ability to think deeply on subjects, as this has become one of my main competitive advantages over others.
