A Place for Reflection

Cultural Offering has a checklist for an effective home study. I'll analyze my own home study in light of his criteria:

  • Writing tools - paper, pen, pencils, computer. Check.
  • Ready access to great books - ideas, reminders, diversions, Check.
  • Music - A home study should be a music room. Check. Bose system.
  • No television - worthless distraction. It has yet to be moved.
  • Domesticated animal(s) - they handle rants, reading aloud and musical tastes better than humans. Still in mourning.
  • Comfortable seating - even if a domesticated animal is resting squarely behind your head. Check.
  • Varied lighting - windows, task lighting and room lighting for all situations. Needs improvement.
  • Busts of the dead - Inspiration (note to self: bring busts to home office). Royal Winton mug of MacArthur. Churchill bust is in living room. So is painting of De Gaulle.
  • Table space - places to put things. Check.
  • Art - to stare at while thinking. This is being remedied. There is one small painting. Also have a poster from the First World War. Various papers are duct-taped on the wall above desk.
Not on Kurt's list: Stacks of files and papers on tables. Books stacked on floor. Globe. Levenger project boxes. PaperMate Profile pens. Cavalry saber. Gavel. Bust of The Maltese Falcon.  Springfield rifle in corner. It's a tad untidy.

I thought my study was close to complete.

Now I realise I need a cavalry saber (will settle for a sabre) too.

Andrew,

Once you've had a cavalry saber in your study you'll never go back to the dreary old decor.
