In But Not Of
Being part of a team without surrendering independent thought is a balancing act. Groups that demand mindless obedience will eventually pay a heavy price. So will those that permit mavericks to wander off in all directions. It is important for both the team and the team members to have certain values that will not be sacrificed.
Over the years, I've heard people attempt to justify unethical behavior by saying they needed the job or they couldn't let their team mates down or if they hadn't participated then their replacement would have been even worse.
All of that is moonshine. The ethical person has to be willing to walk away from any job if staying will produce or abet unethical behavior.
