Go to them

Sage advice at Cultural Offering. An excerpt:

Go to them.  When you are not happy with a business experience, don't tweet your disdain, go to them and explain the problem.  Then ask for a resolution.  Not happy with your grade on that paper?  Skip the snarky Facebook status and go to them.  Articulate your concerns and walk through how you might improve.  Boss not so understanding of the problem you are facing?  As satisfying as the social burn may be, why not exercise your diplomatic skills and try to improve you lot by having a meaningful discussion?

Great advice! If a complaint is warranted, make sure you're complaining to someone who can actually do something about it.

I recently got a poor grade on a paper that I didn't think I deserved. I asked the professor about it, saying something to the effect of, "I like to learn from my mistakes, but I can't find my error. Could you point me in the right direction?"

As it turned out, the person who completed the rubric (a TA) had my paper mixed up with another student's. The professor apologized for the error, and adjusted my grade.

CincyCat,

That's a great example and a great way of handling it.
