Great list! I see several that I need to add to my library wish list. :) I read "The Call of the Wild" as a young girl and loved it. Also loved "Le Morte D'Arthur". My daughter read "Hatchet" with her 4th grade class book club this year, and she really enjoyed it. That said, I first read "Treasure Island" as an adult. For the life of me, I cannot get my head around how Disney managed to turn that book into a children's movie.
"Treasure Island" is extraordinary.I think its appeal for children is that it is not a sweet story. Hey, it's got pirates and knives and that nifty pistol that comes in handy.
