A Key Skill

A key skill at any meeting is to know when people are talking past one another. You frequently see this. People become frustrated with others because they are, in essence, talking about different topics. This is often exacerbated by straw man arguments.

I believe this conduct may be fostered by the use of talking points. People arrive "loaded for bear" and so eager to get in their favorite arguments that they miss the drift of the conversation. They may fail to notice that their concerns have already been addressed, if not completely resolved.

We need to enter meetings prepared to listen and not armored against change.
