How Organizations Get Weird


  1. Dysfunctional individuals are hired.
  2. They gain influence and power within the organization.
  3. They attract, hire, and promote people similar to themselves.
  4. Those people do the same.
  5. Eventually, normal people leave or are driven off. Anyone remaining adjusts to the new arrangement.
  6. The organization itself is altered and its practices foster and nurture dysfunctional people.
  7. All of the above can happen in a surprisingly short amount of time.
