Be - Know - Do
The Army's elements of leadership may seem simple but they are far from it. Think of individuals who have only one or two of the elements. It is not unusual to find leaders who possess the Be and the Know elements but have problems with Do and cannot be relied upon to get things done.
Perhaps even more disturbing are those who have the Know and the Do but lack the ethical commitment and values to Be and thus fail to lead by example. Even those who strive to be ethical may wander around the Be element, seeing life as simply one project or achievement after another; an approach which may cause them to overlook the importance of being well-grounded.
Days can be filled with external reminders to Know and Do, but we need to chart our own reminders to Be.
