Why New Supervisors Go Mad

Guidelines for New Supervisors:

Know what’s going on, but don’t know too much.

Make sure that no surprises occur, but don’t micromanage.

Be caring, but don’t be a bleeding heart.

Get to know your employees as persons, but don’t violate their privacy.

Mentor, but don’t make yourself vulnerable to harassment allegations.

Be colorblind in your decision-making, but “celebrate diversity.”

Achieve results, but don’t let the end justify the means.

Be yourself, but be sure to fit in.

Be approachable, but give yourself time to think.

Be friendly, but maintain distance.

Don’t deceive, but be diplomatic.

Don’t hire by quota, but be sure to meet our Affirmative Action goals.

Stand your ground, but don’t let us hear any complaints out of your area.

Support management, but know when to disregard orders.

Get rid of dysfunctional workers, but don’t get us sued.

Give accurate performance evaluations, but don’t rate anyone too highly.

Take time to smell the roses, but get that project done over the weekend.
