Sensitivity Lesson

"Good morning!"

"How can you say 'Good morning' when there are millions starving in the world! You must be one of those smug people who thinks the world revolves around them and how they are feeling on any particular day. Well, it doesn't and the sooner you do some reading - I'll give you a list of books - then perhaps you'll get a clue as to why it's not such a good morning. Some people might not even make it to this afternoon and here you are giving this fake little greeting as if you really care whether I or anyone else has an enjoyable morning or even one in which basic human needs are met. By the way, I want to get some coffee. Can you give me some cash?"

"Well, uh, yes. I suppose so. Here."

"You'd do that, wouldn't you? Just hand it over without knowing what kind of coffee I'm purchasing and whether the growers are exploited. People can die in villages far away and you don't blink because they don't look like you. You just cruise through your privileged life and leave the heavy lifting to those of us who are socially aware. Open your eyes! I could study you for years and never understand what makes you tick. Wait. Can you give me another dollar? I want to get a Grande."
