The Great Lecturer

We looked forward to his classes.

He had a shaved head and was built like a large bulldog. His voice was pure gravel and his eyes had a perpetual squint. He would introduce the subject and then illustrate key points while waving his reading glasses, calling on class members, and taking questions. Many of his examples were humorous and I can remember them years later. He treated no question as stupid, although some of them were, and we always felt as if he respected our intelligence.

He was a consummate performer who never cheated his audience. Moreover, he had a passion for his subjects.

I think of him whenever someone decries "lecturing" as an inherently boring method of instruction.
