Why They Want to Talk to Me

It's an old story: They have the power but don't have the time to develop a bunch of ideas. I have the ideas but lack the power. My lack of power removes the suspicion that I have a bagful of motives and the fact that I'm detached from the daily crises permits me to spot things they can easily miss. The executives in particular suffer from loneliness and isolation. They need a place to vent without fear of it being spread around the office. As a result, they appreciate a place where they can say wild and candid things without inhibition and get some guidance in the process.

There are days when my office resembles a confession booth. This is good. We all need someone to talk to.

I think the isolation comes from not having somebody to talk to that understands, not necessarily a peer but of a similar intellectual ability and depth of life experience.
