Backward Planning

The old backward planning technique that I learned years ago in the Army still comes in handy. Starting at the accomplishment of the mission and then, step-by-small step, walking backwards helps to spot the gaps and all of the little things which, if unattended, can become barriers.

The acknowledgement of the power of the small is one of the most appealing parts of the process. We are often urged not to micromanage and yet reality reminds us that details can matter enormously. Assuming that details will be well handled is not a wise move. That's why systems, training, and periodic checks are vital.

One need not live in the details, but occasional visits help.
