First Paragraph

For three centuries before the arrival of the Anglo-Americans in the Southwest, the Apaches dominated the region, striking terror not only into the hearts of surrounding Indian tribes but also into the hearts of Spanish colonists who ventured into the area. Mexican mothers frightened their children into obeying by threatening them with the undesignated terror of the "Apaches." Their name itself came from a Zuni word meaning "enemy"; they referred to themselves Dine', meaning "the People."
