Don't Be Too Clever

Years ago I was called in to an urgent meeting with one of my clients, an executive for a large corporation. She wanted my opinion of a proposed strategy which would make an end-run of the very procedures she'd been advocating and administering.

It was a very clever strategy but not so clever that it would not have been spotted within five minutes. I advised her not to do it. To her credit, she groaned and said, "I know. I know. I just wanted you to tell me that. But I really wish I could be an exception."

Don't we all? We want others to follow the rules but when one of those strictures trips us up then there must be some way - isn't there? - that will let us slip around it.

You can't expect others to respect a system if its boundaries are readily circumvented by those in power.

Unless the system itself is unethical, grit your teeth, change or follow the rules, but respect the process.
