They Are Waiting

They know about the problem. They've known for years, but no one has mentioned it publicly. Candor has been relegated to whispered conversations in parking lots and bars. No one wants to be the first to raise the issue - retribution is feared - and so they wait. Each time a new person comes on board, they wonder if that individual will be the one to put the question on the table and yet a day always arrives when they can see that the new kid has become as sly and restrained as the rest of them. An innocence has departed. Meetings come and go with everyone knowing the problem and no one saying a thing.

And then one day . . . .
