We fondly imagined that everything was going to stay nice and friendly. Four days previously I had returned from Florence where the final negotiations for our capitulation had taken place. I had negotiated with General Clark, drunk champagne, eaten Californian tinned fruit, strolled around in full uniform in the company of Allied officers, and finally I had been flown back to Bolzano in an American plane.
