Thanks for an excellent post.

I'd add one that's not exactly a novel, but a quite enjoyable history of the west from the early 1900s: "Letters of a Woman Homesteader," by Elinore Pruitt Stewart.

I've read many novels by Louis L’Amour and Larry McMurtry, but not most of the other authors highlighted here; I'll have to rectify that soon.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check it out.

This will date me, but two of the required reading books when I went to high school were "The Virginian" and "The Ox-Bow Incident."

I doubt if any high schools are requiring those nowadays.
