Whereas in the Fifties, men were The Great Explainers on commercials, telling housewives how detergents would whiten sheets, nowadays if anything needs to be explained, you can bet that a woman is the one producing the enlightenment. Men are frequently represented as dolts. It is no less obnoxious now than the reverse pattern was in the old days.
Blogger, activistm and radio show host Glenn Sacks has launched a campaign against such ads . He also seeks to commend positive ads, such as the classic Volvo television commercial in which a little girl tells a story to her father as he's putting her into the car.
It might be appropriate to recognize the male-bashing ad of the year - I have one hardware store nominee in mind - as well as a commendation for ads, such as the one by Volvo, that are creative and intelligent.
