Signs that People want Solitude

Studies indicate the following items are subtle signs that a supervisor or co-worker does not want to be disturbed:

  • There is a "DO NOT DISTURB!" sign on the office door.

  • The sign is in seven languages.

  • The sign has your name on it.

  • The sign has your name and photo on it.

  • The door is locked.

  • Curses are heard from behind the locked door whenever you knock.

  • The cursing gets louder when you continue to pound.

  • After your fifth visit, the person opens the door and sighs, "It's you again," then shuts and locks the door.

  • You can hear the sound of a chair being pushed against the door.

  • You can hear objects being thrown at the door.

  • When you return an hour later, you discover a sheet of paper taped to the door announcing that the person is on a business trip to Rangoon and will return in three months.
