Password Preservation

In a bold act, Verging on Pertinence orders . . . an Internet Password Organizer.

We've been talking at the office about a similar move, although we plan to get sly and have the passwords in a volume that doesn't have the name Password on its cover.

Zero Mostel used to keep cash in an appropriately named art book.*

We may be equally clever. What could be some contenders for a book in which passwords would be hidden?

Treasure Island? The Secret of Santa Vittoria?

I saw a spate of warnings on the networks this week about phishing scams that look authentic but trick people into revealing their passwords. It sounded exactly like the same scam that I fell for resulting in my old blog now being trapped in Google Purgatory. (Once that happens, forget it... Google is run by robots and the chances of getting in touch with a real person are basically zero.)

Anyway, one of the reports mentioned there are now online sites that manage passwords so you don't have to keep them in writing. They have the advantage of being available to the user anywhere the Internet is accessible.

I'm considering this alternative because I have a laundry list of passwords to keep up with, but so far I haven't made the move. I'm hoping Consumer Reports will get around to rating these sites to help me make a final decision.

John,

Thanks for passing that along. I remember when you had that problem with your site. "Very frustrating" probably doesn't come close to how it must have been.
