Ask a person what the world will be like in 20 years and you'll probably hear about technological progress.
That's a sign of our optimism.
But if you specifically ask about the overall culture, some pessimism creeps in. In certain cases, there is a lot of pessimism.
Although a great deal of my work involves the ability to be skeptical and spot emerging problems, I confess to being rather optimistic. That is fueled, no doubt, by a sense of history and it is certainly not an optimism that insists all is going swimmingly. Instead, the optimism is based on the faith that we have an enormous capacity to bounce back. For all of the fluff and weakness, this is still a pioneer nation. Pioneers know how to survive.
